I chose the obscured selfie because I have some photography experience and a special interest in long exposure photography, so I thought it would be a fun opportunity to play around with those techniques. These exposures range from 2 to 6 seconds long. I've ended up sticking to black and white for this assignment again, because I tend to consider value and shape the most when composing my images and the colors here weren't important.

My face is definitely more distorted than obscured in a few of these images, but I tried to obscure at least an eyeball in each. I spent a couple days in front of my camera playing around with moving my head, parts of my face, or objects in front of my face. Then I moved the images into Lightroom to convert to black and white, crop, and adjust values.

  1. The group seemed to appreciate my use of motion blur and the glare from my glasses to create energy in my self-portraits. They noticed that I am positioned facing the same direction in nearly all of them - which is funny because that is the side of my face I am comfortable photographing. They also said the black & white created more cohesion amongst my photographs.

If I were to revisit this concept, I would probably push myself to explore other angles that make me less comfortable in order to push past my physical insecurities and create images that more freely represent who I am and allow me more creative freedom compositionally as well. I think these same concepts would translate well with more dramatic and less flattering camera angles and lighting if I were less concerned with how I looked in them.
